. Naturopathic medicine
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary care that addresses the root cause of illness or disease and promotes health and healing using natural therapies. It supports your body's own healing ability using an integrated approach to disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention that includes:
· Lifestyle counselling
· Acupuncture/Asian medicine
· Botanical (herbal) medicine
· Physical medicine (massage, hydrotherapy etc.)
· Nutrition
· Homeopathic medicine
Naturopathic doctors
Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are highly educated primary care providers who integrate standard medical diagnostics with a broad range of natural therapies. All aspects of the patient—the physical, mental, and emotional—are taken into account when determining a diagnosis and developing a treatment plan. Your naturopathic doctor will create an individualized protocol designed specifically for you, to help you achieve and maintain optimum health.
Naturopathic treatments can be used alone or effectively combined with conventional medical treatments. NDs often work with and refer to other health care practitioners such as medical doctors, midwives, chiropractors and massage therapists.
Why Naturopathic medicine?
Also known as naturopathy, or natural medicine. It is a complementary and alternative medicine which emphasizes the body's intrinsic ability to heal and maintain itself. Naturopaths prefer to use natural remedies such as herbs and foods rather than surgery or synthetic drugs. Naturopathic practice includes many different modalities. Naturopathic Practitioners and Doctors emphasize a holistic approach to patient care, and may recommend patients use conventional medicine alongside their treatments. Naturopathy has its origins in the Nature Cure movement of Europe. It is practiced in many countries. Naturopathic Clinics
In many US states and Canadian provinces, naturopathic doctors who are trained at an accredited North American school are entitled to use the designation ND or NMD. Those from these particular accredited schools are trained to use diagnostic tests such as imaging and blood tests before deciding upon the full course of treatment, and to refer to other health professionals for standard medical care where it is required.
Naturopathic Research
A growing body of research in complementary medicine is being conducted and published in peer-reviewed medical journals. Naturopathic colleges such as The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine receive government and private grants to research the efficacy of natural therapies and learn about interactions with conventional medicines.
Philosophy of naturopathy
The philosophy of naturopathy is often described by six core values. Multiple versions exist in the form of the naturopathic doctor's oath, various mission statements published by schools or professional associations, and ethical conduct guidelines published by regulatory bodies:
1. First, do no harm; provide the most effective health care available with the least risk to patients at all times (Primum Non Nocere).
2. Recognize, respect and promote the self-healing power of nature inherent in each individual human being. (Vis Medicatrix Naturae).
3. Identify and remove the causes of illness, rather than eliminate or suppress symptoms (Tolle Causum).
4. Educate, inspire rational hope and encourage self-responsibility for health (Doctor as Teacher).
5. Treat each person by considering all individual health factors and influences. (Treat the Whole Person).
6. Emphasize the condition of health to promote well-being and to prevent diseases for the individual, each community and our world. (Health Promotion, the Best Prevention)
